INTRODUCING CATELANI & SMITH
CATELLANI & SMITH
WHERE HANDCRAFTED ITALIAN LIGHTING TRANSFORMS ILLUMINATION INTO SCULPTURAL ATMOSPHERE SHAPED BY EMoTION, CRAFT AND EXPERIMENTATION.
MADE BY HAND, SHAPED BY LIGHT
Catellani & Smith is an Italian lighting design brand founded in 1989 by designer Enzo Catellani. The company is known for its poetic, handcrafted lamps that sit somewhere between sculpture and functional lighting, often emphasizing light as an emotional and atmospheric material rather than purely technical illumination.
DESIGN AS VISION AND EXPERIENCE
ACCIDENTAL ORIGINS, INTENTIONAL CRAFT
The origin of Catellani & Smith unfolds more like an accident than a defined plan. Enzo Catellani began making lamps without the intention of starting a company, and recognition came unexpectedly. The name “Smith” was never a collaborator but an invented identity taken from his horse, used to create distance from authorship and introduce irony and ambiguity into the work. This early gesture of humility and experimentation still shapes the brand’s language today.
Since the late 1980s, the studio has expanded while staying rooted in a handcraft driven practice based in Italy along the Serio River. Each piece is made through slow, attentive processes where traditional craftsmanship meets ongoing technical research. Rather than pursuing perfection as an absolute standard, the work treats light as expressive and human, producing objects that hold atmosphere, presence, and emotional weight.
