CONTROL
—
Designed by Brenda Holzke
Control by Brenda Holzke is a handbuilt ceramic sculpture made from recycled mixed stoneware and porcelain, finished with oxides. The vase-like form is topped with handmade ceramic chains that introduce a contrasting linear element to the sculptural body. The combination of varied clay bodies, layered surface, and handbuilt details highlights Holzke’s interest in experimentation and the physical qualities of the material.
Created in Los Angeles, Control reflects Holzke’s approach to working with clay through reuse, transformation, and material exploration. The handmade chains and irregular ceramic surface create a tactile sculptural presence, bringing together functional references with an expressive contemporary form.

Brenda Holzke is a Los Angeles-based ceramic artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans ceramic sculpture, painting, and mixed media. Working primarily with handbuilt clay, Holzke creates contemporary ceramic sculptures and vessels inspired by organic, indigenous, and geological forms. Her work combines primitive visual references with a contemporary approach to form, surface, and material.
Holzke’s ceramic practice is rooted in experimentation and an intuitive approach to making. She embraces the inherent unpredictability of clay, allowing imperfections, variations, and unexpected results to become part of the creative process. Handbuilt forms and layered surfaces reveal the tactile qualities of the material, while her sculptural ceramics reflect an ongoing exploration of texture, shape, and transformation.
With a background in fine art, design, and functional ceramics, Holzke brings a developed understanding of form and visual composition to her studio practice. Her work has evolved from years of creating handmade ceramic wares into a fine art practice centered on ceramic sculpture and material exploration. Working from her Los Angeles studio, Holzke continues to push the possibilities of clay through contemporary ceramic works that emphasize process, experimentation, and the expressive qualities of handmade art.
